Does Gumroad have order bumps?

Yes. Gumroad shows an optional add-on offer during checkout, before the charge goes through, and it joins the same transaction. It's on the free plan and there's no extra charge for it. What Gumroad doesn't have is a post-purchase one-click upsell. I checked this at Gumroad's own help centre on 12 September 2026.

How does Gumroad's order bump actually work?

Gumroad calls the feature "upsells" and "cross-sells", and both live under the Checkout tab in your account. The help article is titled Creating an Upsell, and it opens with the heading "Offering an upsell at checkout".

There are three types. You can suggest an additional product that pairs with what is in the cart, replace the products in the cart with a different one (useful for pushing a bundle), or offer an upgraded version of the product already selected. You can attach a discount to any of them.

The timing is the part most write-ups get wrong. Gumroad's own announcement of the feature says the modal "shows up after the customer clicks 'Pay', so they have only one chance to make this change to their cart before completing check out." The word to notice is cart. The buyer has pressed Pay, but the charge hasn't settled, and accepting the offer edits the cart rather than starting a second payment. That fits the definition of an order bump: an optional add-on before payment, in one transaction.

An order bump, in the strict sense: the add-on is optional, it is offered before the charge settles, and accepting it edits the cart rather than starting a second payment. Gumroad's version shows as a modal after the buyer clicks Pay, but the mechanics are these.

Does Gumroad have post-purchase upsells?

No. Nothing in Gumroad's documentation describes an offer made after the payment has succeeded, bought with one click against a card that's already on file. The whole mechanism is a pre-payment interstitial that modifies the cart.

If you want to sell somebody a second thing after their first purchase clears on Gumroad, you're back to a workflow email, and the buyer has to click out and start a fresh checkout. That converts far worse than a genuine one-click offer, which is the entire reason the post-purchase upsell exists as a separate feature elsewhere.

This matters when you're comparing platforms, because "upsell" is used loosely in this market. Gumroad's use of the word is accurate for what it ships. It just isn't the same feature as the post-purchase one-click upsell that Podia, Kajabi or Whop mean by the term.

Is Gumroad's order bump behind a paid plan?

No. Gumroad has a single free plan, and its fees article states there are "no monthly payments or other hidden charges." The checkout offer is available without upgrading and without a feature fee on top.

That puts Gumroad in a small group that gives you one half of the pair for nothing. Payhip does the same with its cart cross-sell on a free plan. Neither has the post-purchase leg.

What does Gumroad charge?

Gumroad's fees article says it charges 10% + $0.50 per transaction, and then spells out what that figure leaves out: "This does not include: Credit card processing (2.9% + $0.30), PayPal fees."

So the headline number is not the number. A direct sale costs you roughly 12.9% + $0.80 all in. Plenty of comparison posts quote the 10% and stop, which understates Gumroad against every competitor it's lined up against.

Sales that come through Gumroad's own Discover marketplace are a flat 30%, and that one does include all processing. Once your paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, new direct sales drop to 5% + $0.50 for the rest of that month, resetting on the 1st. Gumroad is also the merchant of record on its own checkout, so Gumroad is the legal seller and pays you out.

What are the alternatives if you need both?

Across the 40-plus platforms I checked, nine ship both an order bump and a real post-purchase one-click upsell, and six of those nine put the upsell behind a monthly subscription. The full table is in the comparison post.

Whop and Systeme.io both undercut us. Whop has no monthly plan at all, ships both surfaces, adds no fee for using them, and takes 2.7% + $0.30 on a domestic card. Systeme.io has a permanently free plan with a 0% take rate and ships bumps, one-click upsells and downsells, subject to free-plan quantity limits. On cost per sale, neither of them loses to us.

Stakk gives you a storefront at stakk.store/yourname with no monthly fee, an order bump that rides the same charge as the product, and a post-purchase upsell. We charge 7.1% + $0.20, which with Stripe's processing on top lands near 10% + $0.50 all in at Stripe's US rates. Money goes into your own Stripe account and Stripe pays you out, so you stay the merchant of record rather than us holding the funds.

If it's the $99-a-month wall you're trying to avoid, note that Stan Store puts both features on Creator Pro at $99, and Podia and Checkout Page land on the same number.

One fee or two. On Stakk a product and its order bump go through as a single charge, so they carry a single fee. An upsell happens after the first payment has succeeded, so it has to be its own charge and it carries the same rate again. There's no separate charge for switching either feature on.

Should you move off Gumroad for this?

If the bump was the only thing you ever wanted, no. You have it, free. It becomes a real question the moment you want the post-purchase leg, because Gumroad does not have one at any price.

Two platforms undercut us on headline rate and ship both halves: Whop takes less per sale, and Systeme.io charges 0% on its free plan. If the take rate is the only number you are optimising, go and use them - the table in the comparison post is there to make that easy.

What you get here instead is how the checkout is put together. The bump rides the same charge as the product on Stakk, so a $29 product with a $19 bump is one transaction carrying one 10% + $0.50, not two. Both halves are on every account with nothing held back for a higher tier. And the layout, the wording and the order the offers appear in came out of funnels that actually ran for agency clients before Stakk existed, rather than a design exercise.

Where we are the wrong answer, plainly: Gumroad is the legal seller on its own checkout, so chargebacks and sales tax are its problem and on Stakk they are deliberately yours. Nothing here goes above $999 or settles outside US dollars, there is no course hosting and no call booking, and a membership rules us out entirely because Stakk has no recurring billing - that is Whop, Podia or Patreon.

Want the post-purchase half as well?

Stakk ships both halves on every account: the bump at checkout and the one-click upsell against the saved card. No monthly fee, no plan gate. You connect your own Stripe account, so the money lands in your bank rather than ours. We take 10% + $0.50 per sale and that figure includes card processing.
